Big turnout expected for Sunday Streets event in Missoula

Photo from Sunday Streets Missoula(MISSOULA)- Last year more than 5,000 people turned out for the “Sunday Streets” event, and if the weather holds this year, that mark could be eclipsed this year.
“Sunday Streets” is when Higgins Avenue is closed to cars and turned over to people on two legs, and two wheels (or more) to promote a bike and pedestrian friendly approach to Missoula. The event is sponsored by similar approaches in many other cities around the world.
The sponsors, Missoula in Motion, hope “Sunday Streets” helps people learn how much fun they can have by walking, biking, skating and trekking around that part of Missoula when they don’t have to dodge cars.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Higgins will be full of free, spontaneous, on-street activities with over 30-businesses and organizations taking part along both the street and in Toole Park. This year the activities will be organized in “hubs” to maximize open space. The hubs will be located at the Hip Strip, Front Street, Pine Street Plaza, and the XXXXs. There will even be chalk drawing all over the Higgins Bridge. While most activities will be ongoing, there are a few things happening only at specific times on this schedule.
9:00am - Missoula Mile: 1-mile footrace (.5-mile kids race) departing from Runner's Edge
10:00am - Move Missoula Pilates Class at the Fish Sculpture (Bess Reed Park)
12:00pm - Tae Kwon Do demonstrations and classes by Championship Training (XXXXs)
1:00pm - Move Missoula Kids' Creative Movement class (Bess Reed Park)
2:00pm - Djebe Bara: African dance demonstration and lessons (Higgins Bridge)
2:00pm - Move Missoula Mat Basics class at the Fish Sculpture (Bess Reed Park)
