Russell Street Bridge to be shut down for paving

(MISSOULA)- Commuters who use the Russell Street Bridge will need to use alternate routes for a couple of days this week.

The aging bridge over the Clark Fork River in Missoula is set to be replaced over the next couple of years. However, the bridge needs to remain in service and that means it needs some attention for continued use.

Starting Tuesday morning, and lasting in Wednesday, the bridge will be closed to all traffic so crews can repave the bridge. Montana Department of Transportation says the work will help smooth the rough deck of the bridge and give it enough life to last until the bridge is replaced.

Missoula leaders hope for major Russell Street grant

(MISSOULA)- Local and state government agencies are coming together to show support for a new federal funding application that could provide millions of dollars for the Russell Street bridge project.

Last month, the Montana Department of Transportation engineers, working with the city and other partners, were able to pin down the final design for the Russell Street bridge. And at the same time, engineers said they might be able to also include some improvements along Russell Street itself as part of this phase of the project.

To see if that's going to pencil out, MDT and the city are applying for a federal TIGER grant that could provide roughly $21-million to match the state and local share for the $26-million project. MDT says if the grant is approved, it would not only pay for the bridge but the street improvements too.

Last week, Missoula County commissioners also threw their backing, signing a letter of support for the grant application, saying the full funding is critical for development along Russell to "fully realize" the "economic, social and transportation potential" of the project.

MDT says the application is due in a couple of weeks and the city and state should find out if the money is approved by early summer.

More engineering work next week for Russell Street Bridge

Crews took the first core samples of the new bridge site last winter- Dennis Bragg photo(MISSOULA)- Drivers who use the Russell Street Bridge as part of their daily routine might want to alter their route next week, as traffic is limited during engineering studies for the new bridge.

The studies are part of the work to replace the Russell Street Bridge over the Clark Fork River. Crews for the Montana Department of Transportation have already taken core samples along the approaches to the bridge. Now, crews will be taking more drilling samples next week to gather more information that will help with the new bridge foundations.

MDT says one lane of the bridge will be closed from October 29th through November 5th. The lane restrictions will be during the overnight hours to limit impacts from the closure. Traffic will be restricted between 9 p.m. and 6:30 in the morning. Flaggers will be controlling the area and MDT says there could be some delays.

At the same time, the state plans to use the closures to take care of the annual bridge inspection which checks the condition of the existing bridge.

The state is working now to wrap up more details for the new bridge, and the eventual reconstruction of the entire Russell Street corridor north of 3rd.
