Cross state chase ends with shootout in Missoula Co

MCSO photo (ROCK CREEK)- A Broadeater County deputy was shot and killed, and a suspect is being treated after being shot and wounded after a cross state pursuit ends in gun fire east of Missoula.

The Missoula County Sheriff's Office reports the chase started in Three Forks where two suspects got into a shootout with law enforcement early Tuesday resuilting in the death of the deputy. 

The pair fled west on I-90, as a BOLO alert was issued statewide for the suspects. The pursuit started when MHP troopers spotted the suspects near Anaconda. Officers used a spike strip at Mile Marker 162 in Powell County, but the pair were able to keep driving for another thirty miles, as the suspects fired at officers. 

The car eventually stopped east of Rock Creek, where the passenger jumped out of the car and shot at officers before he was struck by a bullet. He was taken to the hospital and the driver was taken into custody. 

Westbound lanes of I-90 remained closed between Beavertail and Rock Creek while the investigation is underway. 


Investigators seeking public's help in fatal East Missoula shooting

(MISSOULA)- Detectives are asking for the public's help as they piece together details of Friday's shooting in East Missoula that left a 58-year old man dead.

Dennis Wilson was killed in the shooting that also left a second man injured. He was taken to the hospital and released after being questioned by authorities. 

Now, Missoula County Sheriff's detectives are hoping to hear from anyone that might have additional information that could help their investigation. 

They hope to hear from anyone that stopped by the yard sale at 3985 Hwy 200 E on the morning or early afternoon of Friday, June 5th, please call (406) 258-4810 and request to speak with Detective Jon Gunter or Detective Jared Cochran. 

Authorities say anyone already interviewed by detectives doesn't have to respond to the request. 


Teen dies from accidental gunshot wound

(CLINTON)- Investigators say an 18-year old Clinton teen died of an accidental gunshot wound early Sunday morning. 

The Missoula County Sheriff's Office says Kole Swartz was handling a gun when it discharged, taking his life. A deputy coroner has ruled his death was accidental. 

The Missoulian reported Swartz was a Hellgate High School graduate and a freshman at the University of Montana and a redshirt freshman for the Grizzlies. 


Investigators identify Missoula drowning victim

(MISSOULA)- Missoula County authorities are still investigating, but say it appears a man who died on the Blackfoot River Friday may have died from natural causes.

Emergency medical personnel and deputies were called to the confluence of the Blackfoot and Clark Fork late Friday afternoon with the report that a man had drowned while fishing with his family. The victim has since been identified as 64-year old George Lee Meltzer of Missoula.

The coroner is still investigating the case, but the sheriff's office says preliminary findings show it is "highly probable the death is natural and was caused by a pre-existing medical condition."


Man dies after being struck by train near Missoula

(MISSOULA)- Missoula County authorities say an unidentified man is dead after being struck by a train in East Missoula.

KPAX TV reports the accident happened around 8 p.m. near Deer Creek Road. That's in the vicinity of the shooting range at that location. Missoula County Sheriff's deputies are still investigating, but say the victim was apparently on the tracks, and didn't move to get clear when a train was approaching. 

It was expected that Montana Rail Link freight traffic will be delayed for some time while the accident is cleared.
