Armed robber caught after chase, search north of Missoula

The robbery happened just before 9 p.m. -Dennis Bragg photo(ARLEE)- A 31-year old man was caught early Saturday morning after authorities say he robbed a Missoula drug store, driving north at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour and then trying to hide in the woods.

The Missoula County Sheriff's Office say Michael Burke was arrested shortly after 12:30 a.m. when officers cornered him following a search that lasted just over three hours.

Investigators say Burke robbed the Brooks Street Walgreen's store a few minutes before 9, and then took off with Missoula Police officers in pursuit. The chase continued west, and then north on U.S. 93 at high speeds, until officers were able to blow out his tires using "stop sticks".

MCSO spokesman Jason Johnson says Burke crashed into a ditch and then ran into the woods. The search continued for several hours around Mountain Home Lane and other roads south of Arlee using both county and city officers, with Missoula County's Special Response Team and a city K-9 unit for tracking.

The county issued a MEANS Alert shortly after midnight, warning residents between Arlee and Evaro Hill to secure their homes and not pick up hitchhikers, but Burke was taken into custody without incident a few minutes later.
