Flathead County among the leaders in Montana flu cases

DPHHS graphic (HELENA)- Flathead County is now among the leading counties in Montana with flu cases, as the outbreak of influenza continues to soar statewide.

The latest report from the Montana Department of Health and Human Services shows how the numbers of cases have been climbing since the holidays. Flathead, Gallatin and Yellowstone counties show the highest numbers of new influenza cases through January 6th. Flathead County leads the way with 94-new, confirmed cases reported to the state.

However, DPHHS says the flu is now widespread across the state, with all but three counties reporting at least some cases through last week.

Over 230-people have been hospitalized this flu season and a dozen people have died from flu-related complications.

Flu cases continue to skyrocket in the Flathead

Flathead Co has highest number of flu cases in state- MT Dept of Health graphic(KALISPELL)- The flu outbreak that began to develop in the Flathead before Christmas continues to accelerate, with the number of cases tripling over the past week.

KAJ TV reports Flathead City-County Health Department reported there were 53-cases at the beginning of last week, but the numbers skyrocketed over the next several days. The number of cases reported by area health clinics topped 140 at the end of the week, with 42-cases recorded just on Friday.

And health department officials say they're bracing for new reported cases once pending test results are confirmed the first part of the week. They also add that a rapid rise in influenza cases isn't unheard of, but unusual for this early in the flu season.

People are being reminded to make sure they have current flu shots, and to take everyday precautions such as washing hands and covering their mouth when coughing or sneezing.
