Man killed in Bitterroot wreck

(CORVALLIS)- Montana Highway Patrol troopers are still investigating, but believe speed may have been a factor in the crash that killed a 48-year old Missoula man north of Corvallis.

KPAX TV reports MHP isn't exactly sure when the wreck happened, but the car was discovered off the Eastside Highway early Saturday afternoon.

Troopers say it appears the victim was attempting to make it around a lefthand corner near the Victor Crossing intersection when he lost control of the vehicle on the shoulder, overcorrecting and going off the road. The car flipped in an irrigation ditch where it was hidden from passing vehicles behind a tree.

The man was already dead when emergency crews arrived on the scene.

It was the second serious accident on the Eastside Highway this weekend.

Ravalli County crash injures four

Dennis Bragg photo(FLORENCE)- Four men were hurt, one seriously, when a pair of pickups smashed into each other on the Eastside Highway late Friday night.

The wreck happened around 10:30 at the intersection of the Eastside Highway and Hidden Valley Road just east of Florence.

Montana Highway Patrol says the driver of an older model, full-sized Chevy pickup ran through the stop sign on Hidden Valley Road, running right into the side of another southbound truck that had just finished rounding the curve.

Trooper Scott Bennett says the driver of the first truck slammed on the brakes when he realized his mistake, but by then was only a few yards from the stop sign. The Chevy slid onto the highway and center-punched the oncoming truck in the driver’s side, carrying both pickups off the road and over the bank. Both of the mangled trucks ended up on their sides, with the front of the Chevy completely destroyed.

Bennett says there were two males in each truck and all were taken to the hospital for treatment. One had to be airlifted by Lifeflight helicopter back to the hospital in Missoula. There was no immediate word on their conditions, identities, ages, or the extent of their injuries.

The crash was still being investigated, but Bennett tells MTN it’s suspected alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.

Authorities continue to investigate arrest of Virginia bomb suspect

KRTV photo(BELT)- Authorities are continue to investigate the apprehension of a Virginia man who was wanted for attempted murder and bombing on the East Coast.

KRTV reports Laurence Alan Stewart II was arrested after leading police on a chase Thursday afternoon in Cascade County.

Stewart was wanted by Virginia authorities on a number of sex charges. But police say he made the case worse by setting off pipe bombs at the homes of his ex-girlfriend and two police officers that were working the investigation.

Deputies were called to help Montana Highway Patrol troopers stop a stolen car, using "stop sticks" to blow out the tires. He was caught after a short foot pursuit.

Highway 200 remained closed in the area while officers continued their investigation.

MHP troopers say trucker overcorrected in Homestake crash

KXLF photo(BUTTE)- Montana Highway Patrol says the driver of a truck that flipped on Homestake Pass early Tuesday morning was apparently distracted, or drowsy when he lost control of his semi and rolled the rig over the side of the freeway.

KXLF reports the crash happened just before 6 a.m. when the driver hit the guardrail and rolled over the bank on Interstate 90. The truck broke apart, spilling grain and crashing over the side. The driver wasn't hurt, but had to be cut out of the wreckage by emergency crews.

Troopers are investigating the crash to see if a citation will be issued.

Authorities identify Darby crash victim

(DARBY)- Montana Highway Patrol troopers say a 19-year old man who died in a crash outside Darby this week apparently lost control of his car, causing the wreck.

Christopher Lee Barrett died when the car rolled over on West Fork Road near Darby. KPAX TV reports the car flipped around 3:45 a.m.

Troopers believe Barrett lost control of the car and then overcorrected, sending the vehicle into the ditch where it slammed into some trees. A 15-year old passenger was injured and taken to the hospital in Missoula for treatment.
