Family escapes crashed SUV before it catches fire

(RONAN)- A mother and child, as well as a 54-year old man are recovering after a truck and an SUV crash near Ronan, with one vehicle bursting into flames after the crash.

KPAX TV reports the accident happened around 7pm Saturday evening on U.S. 93 outside Ronan.

The Montana Highway Patrol says the 32-year old mother was driving south in the SUV with her four children when she turned in front of an oncoming pickup. Troopers say the woman and the children were able to get out of the SUV right before it caught fire. She suffered a number of broken bones and her child suffered multiple cuts to the face. They were both airlifted from the scene.

The man driving the truck was also taken to the hospital but suffered no serious injuries.

Troopers say no one in the SUV was wearing seat belts or using child seats.

MHP waiting on tests to determine reason for wrong-way truck driver on I-90

(MISSOULA)- Montana Highway Patrol troopers are hoping toxicology tests will give them some idea why a truck driver sped down Interstate-90 for 14-miles west of Missoula Monday night.

48-year old Darrell Wade Shepherd was finally stopped and arrested at gunpoint near Frenchtown after driving all the way from the Cyr exit in the Alberton Gorge.

KPAX TV reports Shepherd drove east in the westbound lanes after getting on the freeway at Cyr, west of Alberton. Troopers say he headed east in his semi at high speed, causing several people to swerve out of his way. Fortunately no one was injured.

At one point, Shepherd clipped a sign and some reflectors, spilling fuel onto the freeway.

Troopers say Shepherd appeared to be in distress and was hallucinating and sweating when he was arrested, claiming someone was chasing him. MHP is doing toxicology tests to see if he was on drugs or had some other condition that prompted his behavior.
